Dr. Henry Cabrera, whose interests lie beyond mere horticulture, cultivates not only plants but also a spirit of curiosity and community among visitors. Dr. Cabrera’s Lavender Farms: A Leading Agritourism Venue
Dr. Cabrera’s Lavender Farms has become a shining example of agritourism excellence. Since acquiring the property, Dr. Cabrera has embarked on a decade-long journey of substantial enhancements, including the installation of modern electrical systems and the renovation of the water facilities. He has also made considerable advances in animal care by adding three new stables with Dutch doors and establishing a specialized area for poultry.
The farm is renowned for its unique collection of camels, which serve as a major attraction for visiting families and children. These include specimens from two distinct species: the widely recognized Dromedary, or Arabian camel, which is prevalent across the globe, and the rarer Bactrian camel, distinguished by its two humps and adapted to the colder climates of Central Asia. Despite their rarity in the wild, Lavender Farms is home to three of Rhode Island’s five privately owned Bactrian camels, in addition to two Dromedary camels named Jack and Bingham.
Besides the camels, chickens are integral to the farm’s ecosystem, providing natural pest control without the use of chemicals. Dr. Cabrera’s dedication to eco-friendly practices is a key aspect of how Lavender Farms operates. His comprehensive approach merges the preservation of historical elements with contemporary, sustainable agricultural techniques, positioning Lavender Farms as a favored spot for agritourism aficionados. “We have the only two dromedary camels in Rhode Island named Jack and Bingham,” Dr. Cabrera explained. “Jack is the brown one, and Bingham is the white one. They’re about 15 years old and were raised together, and we acquired them in March 2023. Humphrey is our gorgeous 3-year-old Bactrian camel. We’ve had him since he was 5.5 months old. We acquired him from a breeder in Michigan. The dromedaries came from a private individual in Wisconsin. These giant animals are a spectacular addition to any event as they mesmerize guests with their incredible size.” Dr. Henry Cabrera diligently maintains the farm’s historic allure while integrating eco-friendly and current farming techniques. Both the animals and the lavender fields are beloved attractions for visitors of all ages.

Jodi Cummings was captivated by the farm’s distinct charm, calling it one of the most memorable places she has visited. “This is one of the most unique places I’ve visited in a long time. The owner has created an oasis where you can cut your own lavender bundle (they have several varieties, including white), and he offers a small talk about the farm’s history, the types of lavender and how to cut it. Llamas, alpacas and even camels live on the farm, and it’s clear they are well cared for. They have the most beautiful little shop; you cannot leave without buying lavender lemonade.
